I pose this question to those falling for the trap by urging President Goodluck Jonathan to swap Boko Haram PIGS with the #ChibokGirls. One of the problems with Nigerians is that they always like to use what is happening in another continent/environment to justify their shallow and myopic opinion and view.
That America released 5 Talibans to get back one American soldier is not a justification that FG must release Boko Haram PIGS in Police custody to get back #ChibokGirls.
These people have not asked, can America do the same if Talians were operating on American soil? Of course, you know such is not obtainable, at least in today's America.
That Israel on numerous occasions have swapped prisoners with Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas in Gaza is not a justification that Nigeria should swap prisoners with Boko Haram.
The reason is simple...these countries that swapped prisoners did it on country-to-country basis, NOT within the country swap. Israel can NEVER swap prisoners with terrorists operating in Tel Aviv - instead they would roll the tanks and crush them all. Nigeria can easily swap prisoners with Cameroun, South Africa or Ghana. That is very ok.
But, if Nigeria swaps prisoners with Boko Haram, it means that northern Nigeria is now another country. It means they have taken themselves out of Nigeria.
Many people that are talking about how Israel/US swaps prisoners have forgotten that swapping of prisoners is always the last resort after exhausting all the options. Let me give you an example:
In 1997, during the first tenure of PM Benjamin Netanyahu - בנימין נתניהו, 2 MOSSAD agents were sent to kill Khaled Mashal (the leader of Hamas) in Jordan for been among those that carried out 1997 Mahane Yehuda Market Bombings. These 2 agents entered Hamas offices in Amman posing like Canadians. As Mashal walked into his office, one of the agents came up from behind and held a device to Mashal's left ear that transmitted a fast-acting poison. But, soon afterward the 2 Israeli agents were captured.
Immediately after the incident, Jordan's King Hussein demanded that Benjamin Netanyahu turn over the antidote for the poison, threatening to sever diplomatic relations, to try the detained Israeli agents and void the historic 1994 peace deal between the two countries should Meshaal die. Netanyahu ignored him instead launched another covert operation to rescue the 2 agents. That didn't happen because the agents were been moved from one location to another every 6 hours.
Netanyahu continued to explore other strategies until their diplomatic relations deteriorated and U.S President Bill Clinton intervened and compelled Netanyahu to hand it over. The head of Mossad, Danny Yatom, flew to Jordan bringing with him an antidote —naloxone (Narcan), an anti-opioid to treat Mashal. After that the 2 agents were released and also the spiritual leader of Hamas, Ahmed Yassin, who was serving life sentence in Israel.
The moral of this story is that you must first exhaust all your options before you can negotiate with terrorists. That is why it took America 5 years to swap prisoners with Talibans. If not they would have done it after 1 month.
Those urging Jonathan to swap prisoners with Boko Haram should instead urge him to exhaust all our options. Abi we no get options? Boko Haram are like Blackmailers. Give them what they ask for, they'll ask for another thing. Besides, our military strategies have not been exhausted - and this strategy includes the sacking of Shettima, Nyako and Yero - this is the first step in wiping out Boko Haram.
