19-yr-old, who tested HIV-positive after she was gang-raped, seeks justice

Found this story on The Nation. So heartbreaking. Read below...

 Helen (surname withheld) will be 20 years on October 10. But she now bears a burden that is too heavy for her age. She was gang-raped in January this year and was diagnosed with HIV last month. Due to the heart-rending experience and the medical diagnosis that followed, the once cheerful and vivacious Helen now wears a long face as she carries with her the psychological burden of the experience.

After secondary school in 2008, Helen wanted to further her education, but being the fifth of 11 children comes with its own challenge. “Na the condition of no money, na im prevent me from going further,” said Helen when asked why she had not bothered to continue her education.

Despite her background, Helen was unperturbed. Determined that she would return to school some day, she began working as a cleaner in a big firm at Lekki, Lagos, from where she hoped to save for school. She had worked there for almost a year before the tragic episode that altered her life dramatically took place. It was with a deep emotion that she recounted her ordeal.

 If Gowon Didn’t Renege
As Nigeria was heating up by ethnic violence and continued massacre (of mainly Igbos), which followed the assassination of General Aguiyi –Ironsi by northern soldiers and Nigeria dangerously leaning to a civil war, a meeting of Nigeria military leaders were called in Aburi Ghana, to avert the impending war. The Aburi Accord was reached at the end of the meeting that was held in January 1967 as the last chance of preventing all out war.
However, the breach of the agreement jointly reached by military leaders by then Lt.Col Gowon, led to the eventual outbreak of the war.

Igbo delegates to Confab slammed over “poor performance”

A group says southeast delegates have achieved nothing.
A group, Igboezue, has slammed the South East delegates to the ongoing National Conference for their “abysmal performance” since the conference began.
In a statement on Friday by its leader, Chekwas Okorie, the group said it was worried that the core issues which persuaded Ndigbo to embrace the conference with great enthusiasm and hope had no potential of being addressed.
Among the notable Igbo leaders attending the conference are two former Senate Presidents, Adolphus Wabara and Ken Nnamani; President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Gary Enwo-Igariwey and his predecessor, Dozie Ikedife; a former foreign affairs minister and retired army general, Ike Nwachukwu; former governors – Achike Udenwa, Jim Nwobodo, Chukwuemeka Ezeife and Sam Egwu.
