It's like the old story: Man sleeps around, man meets woman, falls in love, settles down, and they live happily ever after. Except in this case, "woman" is replaced with "German auto product." Edward Smith, a 62-year-old Washington State native, is a méchaphile — séxually attracted to machines — who had séx with over 1,000 cars before finally finding lifetime love with Vanilla, a secondhand VW Beetle. (He had séx with a woman just once, a one-night stand in San Francisco. Didn't take.)
Smith, who has also had séx with attack helicopters (!), tells The Mirror: "Some guys look at bóobs and búms on beautiful women. I look at the front and rear on beautiful cars. [...] I know some people will see it as weird but there are a lot of weird things in this world. I am not hurting anybody and I don't intend to hurt anybody."
"When I hold Vanilla in my arms there's a powerful energy that comes from hér. I would say it is extremely satisfying but at times a little melancholy because I know she cannot talk to me. But overall I know she feels what I feel and it's intense."
However, Smith and Vanilla are in an open relationship: He still has séx with a 1973 Opal GT (Cinnamon) and a 1993 Ford Ranger (Splash).
