Ingratitude Has Its Root in South Africa

It is a shame and sad that a country like Nigeria that fought for Nelson Mandela and South Africa to be free was not allowed to even speak at the memorial service.

The same people that destroyed his land, massacred his people, labeled him a terrorist, jailed and poisoned him were given the front row to display their hypocrisy. What a life!

We could recall that when the apartheid regime was looking for Mandela to jail him in the early 1960s, he ran to Nigeria and Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, handed him over to Chief Mbazulike Amaechi who harbored him for six months before he eventually decided to go back, and was arrested in August 1962, tried and jailed.

Murtala/Olusegun Obasanjo regime set up contributory fund to support South Africans and the fight against apartheid. Nigeria was like a home to many African National Congress leaders and South African students. Many of them had access to the Nigerian passports to enable them to travel round the world because the apartheid regime seized their passports.

Companies of the countries that supported apartheid were antagonized by Nigeria as British Petroleum was converted to National Oil. Nigeria also boycotted Commonwealth Games, all to set South Africa free and we got this SNUB!

South African leaders should do the needful by honouring those that also fought against apartheid e.g. Biko etc. Mandela didn't fight apartheid ALONE!!!

RIP Mandela
