The epic dance moves, lip-synching madness and air guitar of sports fan Jeremy Fry went viral in 2009. This month, however — four years later — they went mega-viral.
Just how popular have Fry's moves been lately? Popular enough to catapult the Bon Jovi classic "Livin' on a Prayer" back onto the Billboard Hot 100 more than 25 years after its original release.
In 1987, Bon Jovi's classic anthem topped the Billboard charts for four consecutive weeks. Then in 2009, Fry did the song justice when the Boston Celtics blared it during a break in the action at a home game. Video of his antics, uploaded to YouTube four years ago, have since been watched more than 5 million times.
Then on Oct. 17 of this year, a user named Jose Duran re-uploaded the clip to his own YouTube channel, adding the title "One Man Dances Like Nobody's Watching While Everyone Is — He'll Crack You Up!"
In one month, that upload (above) has been watched more than 12 million times and Liked on Facebook more than 1.7 million times. The renewed interest has landed "Livin' on a Prayer" the number 25 spot in last week's Billboard Hot 100 chart, postdated Nov. 23.
The Hot 100 ranking formula was updated last October to include digital sales and streams of songs in ranking their popularity. That adjustment has been key to Bon Jovi's re-emergence on the charts. "Livin' on a Prayer" was streamed 5.1 million times in the week it hit the Hot 100, according to Billboard.
Billboard also says online streaming accounted for 94% of the tune's success this week.
