Chief Brimah (VII) Invites Nigerians and Ghanaians To Celebrate 200 Years of Yoruba’s in Ghana

With pride and gratitude to the Almighty, Ambassador M Bashiru Peregrino Brimah, Chief Brimah VII, 80, invites Nigerians and Ghanaians to join the Yoruba’s mark 200 years of peaceful, gracious and progressive living in Ghana. The Yoruba’s from Nigeria; Ilorin Lagos, Ibadan, Ogbomosho, Offa, Oshogbo, Abeokuta, Shaki, Oyo and Ijebu-Ode migrated to the Gold Coast in the early 19th century and have since integrated and become a wholesome, intricate part of the nation.

The grand event, captioned, “200 Years Celebrations and Yoruba Heritage Awards” which will hold on Saturday, the 23rd of November at the Aviation Social Centre, Accra in Ghana, and is organised by the executive council and all Yoruba in Ghana. It marks two centuries of Yoruba culture, music, tradition, marriage, trade, leadership, spirituality and love in Ghana.

With a total population of over half a million, Yoruba’s are predominantly in Accra, Kumasi and Tamale among 10 regions with considerable populations. The Yoruba’s have contributed meaningfully to the Ghanaian society in so many ways, and are said to have brought advanced trade to the Gold coast. Yoruba’s are involved at all levels in the country, in politics, publishing, banking, and even in government. The week-long event celebrates the Yoruba deep history in Ghana.

The event will feature Yoruba heritage awards which will be conferred on prominent Yoruba indigenes. According to Alhaji Musah Baba, the President of the Nigerian Community in Ghana, the recipients of the awards include the Oyo State governor, Abiola Ajimobi; his Osun State counterpart, Rauf Aregbesola and Chairman Energy Bank, Ghana, Barrister Jimoh Ibrahim. Others include First Lady of Ekiti State, Erelu Bisi Fayemi; Aare Musulumi of Yoruba land, Alhaji Arisekola Alao; veteran actor and writer, Adebayo Faleti, and former Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Musiliu Obanikoro, among others. Late Chief Brimah I, the first head of the Yoruba community will also be awarded a posthumous award.

The Nigerian High Commissioner to Ghana, Mr. Ademola Oluseyi Onafookan, will be the chief host at the ceremony. The ceremony will also feature the presentation of a book, Exploits of a Migrants’ Community: Chronicles of Yorubas in Ghana, written by Joshua Bolatito Olalere, a managing editor at Delight Communications West Africa Limited, a publishing and media consultancy firm in Ghana.

The occasion will also discuss the role of Yoruba’s in uplifting the community, Nigerian and Ghanaian matters and issues affecting Nigerians in Ghana including connecting with their roots; acculturation and related issues of cultural and international integration, cooperation and partnership in progress and prosperity.

This Saturday, 23rd November, Chief Brimah VII, will receive other heads of Yoruba communities in Kumasi, Sekondi, Koforidua, Ashiaman, Cape Coast, Tamale and other major towns in Ghana as part of festivities.
