Police destroy 240,000 bottles of beer in Kano

Recently in Nigeria, bottles of beer were destroyed by police responsible for the enforcement of Islamic law in the city of Kano. It was revealed Wednesday that 240,000 bottles of beer were bulldozed in a public ceremony, according to a Nov. 27 report from AFP via Yahoo! News. The reason for the destruction of nearly a quarter million bottles of beer was cited as being the Nigerian authorities way of cracking down on what they called "immoral" behavior.
The bottles of beer were recently seized from trucks arriving in Kano, said officials from the Islamic police called Hisbah, who are responsible for enforcing Sharia (Islamic law).
During the operation in which the bottles of beer were bulldozed, Kano's Hisbah chief Aminu Daurawa expressed his hope that by destroying the beer, it will bring an end to the consumption of such banned substances.
"We hereby send warning to unrepentant offenders that Hisbah personnel will soon embark on an operation into every nook and corner of (Kano) state to put an end to the sale and consumption of alcohol and all other intoxicants," Daurawa said.
A bulldozer crushed the bottles of beer outside Hisbah headquarters in Kano, the largest city in the northern region of Nigeria.

The 240,000 bottles of beer weren't the only thing destroyed in the operation: more than 8000 litres of a local alcoholic brew called "burukutu" and 320,000 cigarettes were also wiped out.
"We hope that this measure will help restore the tarnished image of Kano," said Aminu Daurawa.
The destruction of the bottles of beer follows several operations initiated by Hisbah after the governor of Kano State, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, vowed to clean up the city of its "immoral practices."
The Hisbah, founded in 2001, is a police force established by the state government to enforce Sharia. Hisbah works alongside civilian police and has 9,000 members.
The demand for beer in Nigeria has increased in recent years. Nigeria is the second largest consumer of beer in Africa, helped no doubt by its very large population. Another important factor that may influence the demand for beer in Nigeria is the issue of religion. In several northern states of the country Sharia is applied, which prevents alcohol consumption in states that adopt these laws.
This certainly reduces the chances of beer consumption in these states. However, citizens have access to alcoholic beverages in the northern states since these drinks are usually sold at military posts (which is territory of the Nigerian federal government and therefore should not be subject to the laws of the state).
